As the seasons change so should some of your natural skin care products to help your skin adapt to the new season. Everyone is affected by summer differently depending on their skin type. Acne sufferers may experience a worsening of acne, while redness sufferers may experience even more redness, flushing and inflammation.

You're in good hands because in this post we're sharing tips on how to avoid making common natural skin care mistakes, so you won't have to spend the rest of the year fixing the damage.

1. Do not over exfoliate

Here's a fact. You need to exfoliate during the summer months. In fact, you need to exfoliate all year.

Skipping this vital step can make your acne worse. When dealing with acne look for ingredients like niacinamide (Vitamin B3) which helps build cells in the skin while also protecting them from environmental stresses such as; sunlight, pollution, and toxins. Niacinamide may be helpful for severe acne, especially inflammatory forms like papules and pustules. Over time, you may see fewer lesions and improved skin texture.

We recommend that you only exfoliate at night particularly during the summer months. If you over exfoliate, you make the skin more vulnerable to harmful UV rays. That's why you want to avoid exfoliating in the morning because it can open up your skin to more sun damage. Exfoliating with Pure Fiji's Glycolic Overnight Renewal Peel with Mandelic and Niacinamide is the perfect choice.

2. Manage the time you spend outside

Summer is all about the outdoors however just remember that all that extra sweat & sun can wreak havoc on your skin. For starters, pigmentation and dark spots are just one of your summer challenges and they can be triggered by heat and sun. If you're swimming make sure you know the rules about how often to reapply sunscreen. Activities like hot yoga can also trigger melasma, so be careful and stay cool.

If a shower is not within your reach after a sweaty outdoor activity make sure you treat your face with a spritz of Pure Fiji's Coconut Water Hydrating Toning Mist. It contains witch hazel, an astringent plant extract with antioxidant and skin soothing properties. Witch hazel helps fight acne, minimize pores, reduce inflammation and control excess oil production.

3. Using brightening ingredients post-summer

If you're prone to hyperpigmentation and dark spots its best that you take preventative measures including the use of brighteners right away. This means upping our dose of antioxidants, including vitamin C and definitely vitamin B (also known as niacinamide). If you're using a vitamin C serum, this is best applied in the morning under your SPF to provide extra UV protection and prevent hyperpigmentation from occurring in the first place.

4. Skipping your weekly masks

Masking is easy to do in the winter, as we often have more time inside to pamper our skin. When we head outdoors during the summer months, we may neglect masking, but that's a mistake. The summer weather can wreak havoc on your skin therefore using a regular oil-absorbing or hydrating mask like Pure Fiji's Dilo and Coconut Hydrating Masque (depending on your skin type) can go a long way toward keeping your skin looking its best.

5. Ignoring your lips

The skin on your lips is thinner and more fragile than the rest of the skin on your face. In addition, it lacks the melanin (skin pigment) that protects the rest of your skin from the sun. This makes your lips more susceptible to UV damage and sunburns. The lips also dry out sooner than the rest of the skin, which is why chapped, torn lips are more common in the summer.

It's a mistake to ignore your lips in the summer. Exfoliate at least once a week with Pure Fiji's Coconut Sugar Lip Polish and a washcloth. Next, apply Pure Fiji's Coconut Lip Sleeping Masque before you sleep for smooth, soft and perfectly defined lips. Use a lip balm daily to help repair damage and moisturize the skin.

6. Using SPF moisturizer at night

SPF moisturizers are great for the day time but not the best for night. You see most moisturizers that contain an SPF compromise their hydrating properties to accommodate the sunscreen. Sunscreen typically clogs pores so that's a definite no-no for night time. At night, when your skin is repairing itself, it's better to use a moisturizer like Pure Fiji's Hydrating Multi Active Night Creme.

Hydrating Multi Active Night crème's intensive hydrating night treatment feeds your skin with the advanced technology of anti-aging peptide Matrixyl 3000 combined with dilo and beach almond leaf hydrosols. These powerful ingredients work all night to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles while strengthening and hydrating skin. Wake up to skin that looks replenished, restored, and renewed.
